Photograph by Master Sergeant G.B.Gilbert and Captain H.K.Baisley "EXPLORER II" FLOATS OVER AN OASIS IN SOUTH DAKOTA'S BADLANDS How once fertile land has been washed away during past ages is strikingly depicted in this photograph from one oftheairplanes following theballoon. The level, cultivated tableland beneath the gondola breaks away abruptly into small-scale mountains and canyons. A tongue oferosion, likealicking flame, reaches into the checkerboard farm land from the right. The balloon here is at an elevation of about 16,000 feet and has filled outslightly.
