Photograph byW.Robert Moore "THERE IS A TIME TO FISH, AND A TIME TO DRY NETS" This proverb, attributed to China, is literally observed near Miyajima on the Inland Sea (page 479). Frugal families often liveontheir boats. The catch here is tremendous and varied, but ocean craft often seek other kinds of fish hundreds of miles offshore. Rough glass balls, used tofloat nets inJapanese waters, have been picked up on beaches of the American west coast, having drifted some 5,000 miles across the Pacific.
