The bridge leads directly tothe huge Cathedral, a former Moorish mosque begun more than 1,100 years ago with the object of attracting Mohammedan pilgrims toC6rdoba instead ofMecca. Dur ing the civil war the Spanish Government expressed the hope that such historic monuments would be spared (page 427).
