Spectators carry switches which commemorate the ancient custom of whipping a smallboy at each marker toteach him and the citizenry to respect boundaries. At the extreme left stands the Yeoman Gaoler. In former times, the edgeofhis ax, when directed toward aprisoner returning from trial, indicated that he was condemned to death.
