AT PORTOFERRAIO, EXILED NAPOLEON RULED HIS MINIATURE KINGDOM OF ELBA FORTEN MEMORABLE MONTHS The dethroned Emperor of the French reigned over the tiny domain like a comic opera monarch from May, 1814, toFebruary, 1815, when he escaped toFrance and launched the comeback that ended at Waterloo. His "palace" stands on the capital's heights among larger buildings behind the lighthouse and old fortress (upper center). Elba's present sovereign is King Victor Emmanuel III. Its mines, celebrated in ancient times, produce alarge part ofItaly's iron ore. The Greeks called it "Soot Island" because of the smelting furnaces that belched smoke over the harbor, as modern chimneys dotoday.
