From ships likethese some flyers took off inthesearch for Amelia Earhart. Along the shore of these sheltered waters off the west coast of Maui lies Lahaina, ancient royal capital ofHawaii. Behind itbroad fields ofsugar cane cover slopes leading up to the west Maui peaks. Opposite the pier is a large sugar cane mill. Back of the settlement stands Lahainaluna School, established in1831 bythe American Mission Board.
