CAVALRY DRESSED IN UNIFORMS OF THE MEXICAN WAR ERA PARADE AT THE FORT THAT TAYLOR FOUNDED Two companies of the famous Second Dragoon Regiment, whose uniform these troopers wear, were stationedatFort Brown, Brownsville, in1848 (page 86). Watching the soldiers are residents of Brownsville attired as Charros (Plates II, IV, VI, XII, XVI, and pages 62, 78).This costume, afavorite one with Mexican men, had its origin on haciendas or ranches of colonial times. Tight-legged trousers were fitting attire for the saddle, like the jodhpurs of today. Broad-brimmed hats protected wearers from a near-tropical sun.
