It stands on the highest hill in Istanbul, near the Adrianople Gate, through which Mohammed the Conqueror's troops entered the city. Pointing to Mecca, the prayer niche between the candlesticks occupies the site of a Christian mon astery. From the pulpit, or mimbar (right), Moslem leaders recite the profession of Faith each Friday.
