After theCivil War, asthe railroads pushed westward, reckless slaughter of the bison began. By September, 1883, only one large herd of about 10,000 headwas left. Sitting Bull, accompanied bywhite hunters, found them in a North Dakota canyon and exterminated them in less than two months.
