This forced landing led tothe founding of Jamestown, on the James River, the first permanent English settlement. After planting a wooden cross where the stone shaft now stands, John Smith wrote to his backers in England: "The show of land there is white hilly sand . . . and along the shores great plenty ofpines and firs."
