C) O r A NATIVE KING AND HIS COUNSELLORS The coast line of the Gold Coast extends 350 miles, bounded on the north and west by the French territories and on the east by German Togoland, the total area being about 72,500 square miles. Of the many native tribes governed bytheir kings, the warlike Ashantis -. and the crafty Fantis stand out; the Ashantis, born fighters, have battled with the English for everyfoot oftheir country, and were not finally crushed until 1900. The capital and seat of government is Accra, with a population of about 30,000, the chief port ofthe eastern part of the coast; the other large towns are Elmina and Cape Coast Castle. The estimatednative population ofthecolony is 1,500,000, with a very small percentage of whites.
