THE HUGE EARS OF A BULL ELEPHANT One of a herd of 8 or I bulls. He was first knocked down by a well-placed bullet from Mrs. Akeley's rifle, but heregained his feet, and six bullets failed to stop him as he made off. When we came up with him a half-hour later hegot our wind and charged ferociously. Our shots stopped him, but we fired at an angle that necessitated piercing great masses ofbone toreach the brain. He charged the third time before a bullet found its way to the brain, just as he had nearly caught one of ourboys. An extremely heavy, thick-set bull with short, thick tusks of 80 pounds each. His ears were extremely large, 6feet 5inches indepth.
