ONE OF THE WONDERS OF RUSSIA: TIIE BELL TOWER IN THE KREMLIN, WITH THE CATHEDRAL OFARCHANGELS ON THE LEFT The tower was built by Boris Goudonov, in order to give employment to the people at the time of the great Moscow famine (see text, page 434). The tower contains 34 bells, the largest weighing 65 tons, which is clearly seen hanging in the center ofthebuilding (see also illustration, page 438). All the bells are large, one of the smaller being shown on page 439, and two of them are ofsilver. Itwas this same Boris Goudonov who reduced the peasants to serfdom, in which condition they remained until 186I. The Cathedral of Archangels (ontheleft) contains thetombs of all the Tsars and Grand Dukes until Peter the Great, the body of Ivan the Terrible resting besidethat ofhisson, whom heslew with his own hand (see page 43I).
