The inventors of the United States have paid all the cost of maintaining thepatent system and sixmillion dollars besides. Washington knows this building as the Patent Office, yet strictly speaking it is the Interior Department, ofwhich thePatent Office ione ofmany branches. The front of the building is adorned with a fine portico of Doric columns copied in pattern and dimensions after those oftheParthenon.
