Sir Francis Drake was playing bowls here on the Hoe when theSpanish Armada was sighted, but would finish his game before he went to meet it. In the distance lies Dartmoor, which has beendescribed asa"high-lying moorland--a mon strous lump of granite covered with a sponge of peaty soil." It contains many menhirs, stone circles, and other relics oftheancient Britons (see page 37).
