Photograph from Prof. Albert T.Clay UNOPENED LETTERS WRITTEN IN THE DAYS OE ABRAHAM, ABOUT 2000 B.C. The clay envelope contained the name of the individual addressed and the seal impression ofthesender. The reason that the letters have not been opened is that they are copies of the original letters, used for filing purposes. Note thatthe envelope ontheright hasbeen broken at the top and the letter is exposed. These letters are now in the Yale Archaeological Collection. Babylonia had apostal system, and itisknown that there were regular dispatches between some of the principal cities. Among the large amount of material unearthed have been agreat number of shipping tags made of clay. These have upon them the name and address of the party to whom themerchandise was dispatched. The tags were usually made of small lumps of burnt clay.
