Thecones aresonumerous that they seem like mere striations. The immediate foreground of the picture lies just below the original level of the plateau, and itshows thework oferosion. Nearly 50,000 cones are in the area covered by this photograph. In the right foreground appears a cone, while hundreds may bediscerned inthe back ground (see text, page 325).
