Photograph by S.I.Cassar THE GATE TO VALLETTA, SHOWING THE OLD WALLS OF THE CITY AND THE MOAT Valletta takes its name from its founder, Jean de la Vallette. who was Grand Master of the OrderoftheKnights ofMalta during thefamous siege of the island in 1565, when the forces of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, under Dragut, were defeated. The defenders numbered between 6,ooo and 9,000, while the assailants were variously estimated at from 29,000 to 38,500. Grand Master Vallettehad previously participated inthedefense of Rhodes, had been captured by Dragut and made to row as a galley slave until ransomed (see page453).
