,. Photograph from Alexander Wilbourne Weddell THE RUINS OF THE TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS The present ruins date from the age of Hadrian. Legend says that this is the place where the lastwater ofthe Deluge disappeared, the first sanctuary having been erected here by the grateful Deukalion. The columns now standing are of exquisite beauty, and the golden brown color lent to them by time adds to their charm. On the last column in the group lived a long line of pillar hermits, or "stylites" (see text, page 577). The last of these died about i86o.
