CLIMBING THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad crosses the Rockies over three passes, each more than 1o,ooofeet high. At Ibex Station itreaches II,522 feet. This is half a mile higher than the highest automobile road in Europe and nearly two-thirds of a mile higher than theHospice ofSt.Bernard, the highest habitation in Europe. Five engines are required to move the "Denver Limited" up the Soldiers Summit grade, and even they have ahard struggle when the tracks are wet or greasy.
