©Wiele and Klein THE MOST IMPORTANT ARCHITECTURAL REMAINS IN SOUTHERN INDIA, ATSEVEN PAGODAS, MADRAS The antiquities of Seven Pagodas in the presidency of Madras delight the archeologists. From its two pagodas toVishnu and Siva, and five other temples buried by the sea, according to tradition, the place gets its name. This unique piece of sculpture, whose history iswrapped inmystery, is called "Arjuna's Penance," and covers a mass of rock 96 feet long and 43 feet high. The largest ofthe figures inhuman form, left ofcenter, is Siva, with Arjuna, the ascetic, on his left, both surrounded by various animals.
