Thefamous Rand oftheTransvaal isaridge of granite outcrop near Johannesburg extending east and west nearly 80 miles. Most of the other famousgold workings oftheworld areinquartz formations or in stream beds, but on the Rand gold occurs in sediment laid down on uptilted granite base block. The success oftheRand isnotdue to very rich deposits, but to regular deposits scientifically worked. Note the human figures silhouettedagainst theskyline.
