Marshes and forests cover the interior and the popu lation is confined in the main to the coast line. Finnish costumes are colorful and picturesque, but are only occasionally seen nowadays in country districts. GIRLS FROM THE ALAND ISLANDS The inhabitants of thisgroup ofsome 300islands and rocky islets, now belonging to Finland,are mainly ofSwedish descent, and live by fishing and cattle-raising. The girl totheleft isanative ofSaltvik, the hills of which are admired fortheir picturesque cliffs ofredgranite. The girl to the right is from theisland ofHoutskar.
