The skin ofthe polar bear is considered indispensable for trousers, without the warmth of which long journeys in the winter time would beimpossible. Itisalso used as a bunk rug. The "water bear" of sailors is amphibious, being more at home in the water than on the ice fields. Ithas been reported swimming 1oo miles from land.
