Photograph by Clifton Adams THE GREAT FALLS OF TIIE POTOMAC AT LOW WATER These falls, only 30 minutes from the White House by automobile, form one of the greatest cataracts of our Atlantic watershed. The preservation of these falls and of the Potomac gorge below is one of the basic features of the project which has been prepared bythe National Capital Park and Planning Commission, in compliance with the instructions of the Congress, "to develop a comprehensive, consistent, and coordinated plan for the National Capital and its environs in the States of Maryland and Virginia, . . . to preserve forests and scenery in andabout Washington, and toprovide for the comprehensive, systematic, and continuous development of park, parkway, and playground systems of the National Capital and itsenvirons."
