Photograph by Arxiv "Mas" THE LOFTY COLUMBUS STATUE OVERLOOKS THE HARBOR OF BARCELONA (SEE TEXT, PAGE 391) The monument, erected in 1882-88, is 200 feet high. The lower part is surrounded by eight bronzelions and adorned with bronze reliefs of scenes from the life of the great explorer, medallions of his patrons, and allegorical figures of Catalonia, Arag6n, Le6n, and Castile. An iron column rises from this base and supports a large gilded ball, on which stands a 26-foot bronze statue of the Admiral. Inside the shaft anelevator ascends tothe ball. At the right is the customhouse.
