The monarch awoke, leaped on his horse, and, putting the girl on his saddle, fled. But the voice ofGod commanded him to cast her to the mercy of the flood to expiate her sin. The Breton fisherfolk tell ofhearing the bells ofthe submerged churches ringing wildly when storms are raging over Douarnenez Bay (see also Color Plate V). Lalo's opera "LeRoi d'Ys," isbased on this tale.
