Photo by Hiram Bingham LLAMAS AT SANTA ROSA STATION, SOUTHERN PERUhoto byHiram Bgh In order to reach the field of operations and Cuzco, the base of supplies, the expedition went fromthe port ofMollendo byrail toJuliaca near Lake Titicaca and thence north to Cuzco. On the way, near the railroad stations, herds of llamaswere frequently seen. Sometimes, asin this case, their packs had just been removed, and may be seen in the lower left-hand corner of the picture. The variegated markings ofthe different animals bear evidence to the centuries of domestication that this "American camel" has seen.
