4 r:^ Vf '#1 Photo by Rt. Rev. Bishop of Lucknow A SADHU HANGING HEAD DOWNWARDS Sometimes an ascetic will hang in this way for half an hour at a time and at intervals of two hours throughout the day. While suspended, he is swung by a disciple to and fro through the smoke of a log fire beneath him. So great is the admiration excited by a penance of this sort that the offerings for a single day often reach the princely sum of three rupees (one dollar). 1295
