The great red ape TS SHYNESS IS LEGEND. Few people have met a free-roaming orangutan face to face. Logging and poaching threaten its very survival as a species. Thus it was a rare moment when this huge male (left) descended from his treetop home in the rain forest of Borneo to feed in the presence of Mrs. Birute Galdikas-Brindamour. An orang orphan that she raises clutches the gunwales of her dugout (below). Encouraged by the late Dr. Louis S. B. Leakey, the young scientist-with her photographer husband-has begun a painstaking years-long study of this imperiled Asian primate. A National Geographic Society research grant, supported by your dues, helps make this work possible. Won't you invite a friend to join today.
