A trapper's rugged life drew Dan Hytry and Jeff Lesniak from Wisconsin in 1987. Getting from their home base at Lake Minchumina to a cabin at Castle Rocks in Denali National Preserve is a two-day bone-jarring ride; it also tears up the snowmobile, Dan finds (right). The young men work a trapline started by old-timers in the early 1900s. They take mostly marten, which Dan skins. The furs are auctioned in Canada.
