Carpet of wildflowers leads the author toward a ruin on Coll where Samuel Johnson and James Boswell found lodging in 1773. Islanders call the structure the "white house," perhaps because chimneys saved it from soot of peat fires. In "black houses," smoke escapes through a hole in the roof, darkening the ceiling.
