Sir Stamford Raffles, a British governor of the Netherlands Indies and founder of Singapore, res cued the shrine from obliv ion. He began excavating the ruins about 150 years ago; the Dutch finished the project in this century. Pinnacled stupas occupy Borobudur's upper terraces. Stone latticework forms each bell-shaped shrine and encloses an image of the Buddha. Visitors try to touch the statues by reach ing through openings, hop ing their wishes will come true.
