UNDERWOOD& UNDERWOOD Crewmen board the luckless NC-1 at Rockaway Beach, New York. Author Bellinger stands in the nose at left. Lumbering toward Lisbon from Newfoundland, the big flying boat became lost and landed off the Azores. A Greek ship rescued the crew, but waves demolished the plane. The NC-3, third plane in the 1919 transatlantic attempt, also came down at sea, but was able to taxi and drift to the Azores.
