Bearded Sam Swain turns a machine salvaged from a shipwreck. Sheep skin dries on a wall. Twelve years later the deserted cottage awaits destruction by the three day-old volcano, which has broken through the earth several hundred paces away. Incandes cent streams of lava and cinders will soon thrust down the slope and out to sea.
