In 1933 an uncontrollable conflagra tion destroyed 245,000 acres of virgin timber, and subsequent blazes brought the total to 300,000. Disaster struck again in 1939 and in 1945, razing second growth and consuming humus in the soil. The Oregon State Board of Forestry is rehabilitating the land by scientific methods. Charred stumps and logs remain a fire hazard.
