When Coronado, Spanish explorer of the Southwest, arrived before thenarrow gate in1540, he was refused admission. After an hour of battle, his soldiers forced their way in. They found food but no precious metal, and theexpedition was considered a failure. The troops departed and the Zunis remained unmolested for forty years.
