Echoes from Yugoslavia 795 Photograph by Bertram Brotherton Lake Bled, Former Playland of Yugoslav Royalty, Lies 5 Miles South of the German Border The famous resort, high in the Julian Alps, at the nation's northwest tip, was occupied early in the Nazi in vasion. Ten miles to the west is the Italian frontier. From the center of the lake juts a tiny wooded islet sur mounted by a white church spire. On the crag at left stands a thousand-year-old castle.
