© National Geographic Society Painting by Edward Herbert Miner Sturdy, Hairy Old English Sheep Dogs Can Gallop Fast, though They Move with aBearlike Shuffle "Bobtail" or "bob" they are affectionately called. Some are natural-born bobtails, but others are made so bydocking the tail atthefirst joint when thepuppy is three or four days old. Bobtails have thick rainproof coats, mostly of pigeon-blue color with white markings.Their bark isloud, their skull well formed and "brainy." Through hair that all but hides their eyes they peer at the world with an air of dignity and wisdom.
