They dug canals and built typical Dutch homes. Malaria and other tropical diseases drove them to higher ground. Warehouses, mercantile offices, and Malayan and Chinese homes now line the old waterways. Most Europeans liveinsuburban Weltevreden, with modern shops, hotels, clubs, theaters, and government buildings.
