S.Army Signal Corps, Official WACS "Strike Up the Band" When Wounded Soldiers Descend the Gangplank to American Soil atCharleston The WAC musicians from Stark General Hospital, led by Warrant Officer Florence A. Love, supplement the music oftwo Port ofEmbarkation bands ingreeting GI's when hospital ships dock (page 338). The WACS have four other bands-two at Des Moines, Iowa, one at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and one atFort Hamilton, Brooklyn, New York. The Chateau Thierry in background is one of 19 hospital ships operated by the Army Transportation Corps. Home port for 17ofthem is Charleston; for the others, Los Angeles. Some are new Liberty ships, others prewar freighters and Army transports,all converted into modern floating hospitals.
