Rhode Island, Modern City-State 139 A Village Church in the City Houses the New World's First Baptist Congregation Since it was organized by Roger Williams in 1638 the Providence group has had a continuous existence. In 1775 it built this meetinghouse "for the Publick Worship of Almighty God, and also for holding Commencement in." Since then, Baptist-founded Brown University has held year-end exercises in it. The graceful steeple is from an unused de sign for St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London. Built by ship carpenters, it withstood the hurricanes of 1815 and 1938.
