I Al, 532 Acme Dedication Day Was the 160th Anniversary oftheSigning oftheConstitution Two weeks after theSpirit of1776 received awater christening, thecomplete train gotachampagne sprinkling in Philadelphia, where theConstitutional Convention met in1787. Here Mrs. Arthur C.Kaufmann smashes abottle across a car door to mark theofficial opening oftheexhibit. Afew minutes later thefirst visitors stepped inside as the train began a three-day exhibition intheQuaker City. Irving Berlin's popular song, "The Freedom Train," was introduced atthese ceremonies, September 17,1947. The train called firstat cities along the eastern seaboard, then swung south and west. Itvisited allofthe 48 States. In the courseof thelongest journey inrailroad history, none ofthe9civilians or27servicemen aboard traveled free. The American Heritage Foundation paid for their tickets.
