© National Geographic Society Painting byW.Langdon Kihn Old-time Chipewyans Come Across Vast Fields of Snow To Trade at Fort Prince ofWales, Churchill, Manitoba Here the artist has reconstructed the period of about 1770. Fort Prince of Wales was destroyed by the French in 1782, butsome ofthewall still remains. Since the territory between here and The Pas is the land of the caribou, tepees are represented as covered with hides. The sleds are ofthetoboggan type, different from therun nered sledges. Northernmost of the western Algonquians, these Indians ranged west of Hudson Bay as far north as theCaribou Eskimo.
