Each call must be handled separately, each made to order. To render this ser vice in a way that fits the needs of the American people, the operation of the System is conducted by 24 different com panies, each adapted to the area it serves. Each of the Bell Companies takes advantage of the research findings of the Bell Laboratories, commanding scientific talent unsurpassed in any industry. The quality and precision manufacture of the telephone equipment and appara tus used by the entire System are assured by the specialized production methods of the Western Electric Company, which manufactures for the Bell System.
