E.A.Brown TAAL VOLCANO, ON AN ISLAND IN LAKE BOMBON, LUZON, HAS FREQUENTLY SPREAD DESTRUCTION AND DEATH Several major eruptions have been recorded since 1709, and the volcano was active long before that time. As early as 1572 anAugustinian friar wrote of it: "There is a volcano of fire which is wont to spit forth many and very large rocks, which are glowing and destroy the crops of the natives." A particularly severe and destructive activity occurred in 1911 (see, also, "Taal Volcano and Its Recent Destructive Eruption," by Dean C.Worcester, in the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE for April, 1912).
