Photograph by Nieuvenhuis NIAS WARRIORS CLAD IN COATS OF MAIL, ORNATE METAL HEADDRESS, AND NECKLACES The coats of mail are of sheet metal, which takes the place of rhinoceros hide, formerly used. Under Dutch rule, warfare hasbeen reduced toamini mum, but until recently each chief kept his fighting force in readiness. Actual battle consisted of fencing withspear and warding with shield, oratclose range using the knife instead of the spear. While great acclaim attended the victor in open battle, he mightgain almost equal attention bysecuring a head from a hostile village, even though it might have been taken from ambush and the victim a woman or child.
