Its name recalls the strife between rival claimants of thePortuguese crown alittle more than acentury ago (see Color Plate IV and text, page 58). Stunted evergreens, bent by the prevailing winds, lean toward a fertile expanse of weathered ashand lava. In1630 the rain of ashes was so constant and memorable that the island's annals record it as "the ash year."
