KING WILLIAM III ON HIS FIERY CHARGER IS A POPULAR MURAL In 1688 the Prince of Orange defeated King James II, and the next year became King of England. When James attempted to regain the throne, William again vanquished him in the Battle of the Boyne, near Drogheda, now in the Irish Free State (see text, page 608).
