A MASSIVE ROUND ALTAR BEGINS ITS JOURNEY TO A MUSEUM Although this altar has not been exported, it was moved with that intention. A gang of men pulled it into a clearing toprepare itfortransport. Oxteams, traveling by night to avoid the intense heat of the day, hauled all the crated monuments from camp to the river. There men loaded thestones onrafts which floated them down to the seaport, Alvaro Obreg6n. Eight of the 16 major sculptures which the expedition took from Piedras Negras went onloan totheUniversity ofPennsylvania Museum; the others to the National Museum of Guatemala.
